About the role

Gauss Fusion GmbH is advancing a commercially scalable stellarator fusion power. Our team brings together leading expertise in fusion physics, advanced engineering, computations, and industrial manufacturing. We are now seeking a Nuclear & Neutronics Engineer to help shape the design, safety, and performance of our core fusion systems.
This is an opportunity to work at the frontier of fusion energy, developing critical components for a future stellarator based fusion power plant, while contributing to Europe’s most ambitious energy initiative right now!

Main responsibilities

As a Nuclear & Neutronics Engineer at Gauss Fusion GmbH, you will:
  • Develop technologies for breeding blankets, first-wall structures, shielding, divertor systems, and other auxiliary components, with a strong focus on commercialization, industrialization, and engineering readiness.
  • Perform detailed neutronics analyses for stellarator fusion systems, including complex CAD geometries and volumetric plasma neutron sources.
  • Design, run, and optimize Monte Carlo simulations, and clearly present results to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Scale and refine neutronics simulations for high-performance computing (HPC) environments.
  • Collaborate closely with thermal, mechanical, and materials engineers to support coupled multiphysics analyses
  • Python scripting/automation to support and document simulation workflows with the use of e.g. Jupyter Notebooks
  • Work within a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary team tackling challenges with no established blueprint, requiring creativity, persistence, and systems thinking.

Qualification and educational requirements

  • Master’s degree or higher in nuclear engineering, nuclear and/or particle physics, astroparticle physics, fusion engineering or related field.
  • Strong understanding of nuclear physics with a focus on interaction of fast neutrons with matter
  • High proficiency with Monte Carlo neutronics tools such as OpenMC and MCNP or PHITS
  • Demonstrated experience with advanced neutronics workflows (e.g., large-scale CSG models, DAGMC, CAD to CSG conversion, unstructured mesh) and application of variance reduction methods (e.g., weight windows)
  • Experience with advanced data reduction and processing (NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, SciPy)
  • Experience with working in Linux operating systems
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD modelling tools (e.g. FreeCAD)
  • Proficiency in 3-D meshing of CAD models

About us

Gauss Fusion is a European fusion company focused on industrialising stellarator fusion and developing a modular power plant architecture, critical technologies and industrial capabilities required for scaling fusion power plants in the future.

The start-up was founded in 2022 by Frank Laukien together with European high-tech companies with capabilities in magnetic-confinement fusion and component production for Fusion experiments like ITER. Gauss Fusion combines fusion science and systems engineering with industrial engineering and manufacturing expertise. Its peer-reviewed GIGA™ power-plant platform provides the technologically most promising system-level architecture to build cost-efficient stellarator power plants at scale.

Within this architecture, Gauss Fusion is advancing critical technologies in areas including demountable magnet systems, tritium breeding, fuel-cycle technologies, and plasma exhaust. Working with industrial partners, technology providers and leading research institutions across Europe, the company is building the engineering, technologies and supply-chain capabilities required to progress stellarator fusion towards industrial deployment.

Join us on our journey to revolutionize the energy landscape and make fusion power a reality.

The time is now!
